The Users & Friends of Manor House Library

    Who are we?

    • We are a group of library users which formed as an action group to fight plans intended to merge our library with Blackheath Village Library and re-locate us both in the Leegate Centre, Lewisham in 1999.

    • Our membershi is open to all users and friends of Manor House Library, other Lewisham Libraries or anyone who would prefer public libraries to remain as a Public Service.
    • Nationally, we are affiliated to The Library Campaign and Speak Up for Libraries. Regionally, we are affiliated to Libraries for Life for Londoners (LLL) and The London Civic Forum (GLA).  We are apolitical, but give support to any political party which will proactively support our library aims and conversely, oppose any party which does not.
    • Our committee comprises a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Newsletter Editor, and a co-opted member with special expertise (On occasion).
    • We also have strong links to other local groups such as Manor House Gardens Users Group, Manor Park Users Group, Voluntary Action Lewisham, and the Lee Green AAssembly.  We retain links with Lewisham's Federation of Local and Amenity Societies (FOCAS) and the local volunteer heroes operating the New Cross Learning (community library).
    • We aim to secure our library in the Manor House, Lee for ouor users and friends while working toward protecting public libraries from closure everywhere.
    • We produce a lively newsletter four times a year.
    • This website is linked from within the LLL wbsite www.librarylondon.btck.co.uk.
    • Having saved our library from the threat of 1999, we became active Project Board members for its subsequent refurbishment which was completed in 2009.  A picture of our building is shown here.

    • We work diligently on the heritage aspects of Manor House and its library and are proud of our links to The Baring Foundation.
